The Irish Wolfhound Club of Northern Ireland was founded in 1971, by several breeders to promote the exhibition, breeding and the general welfare of the breed in Northern Ireland.
This year's Championship Show at Hillsborough Fort was a very enjoyable day, the results and photos of class winners can be viewed via the Results of Championship Show link. It was judged by
Mr Jürgen Rösner, one of
Germany's best known Irish Wolfhound breeders and judges. This was his first appointment
in Northern Ireland. The show was on the Friday, 28th September. Best in Show was
Ch Caredig Hegarty, owned by Mrs
D Tebbutt. The critique of the show can be seen
here.
Mr L Dean has published a DVD of this year's Championship
Show, please contact
Liam at
dean644@btinternet.com for details. He also has copies from previous years.
We also hold regular 'get-togethers' throughout the year. In July, a Fun Day was held at Gulliagh House, Co. Dublin. There were various events held throughout the day, as well as good food and drink. The highlight of the day was the lure coursing. Mr L Dean was good enough to film the coursing last year, some of the races can be downloaded from here.
The IWCNI Championship will be held again in Hillsborough Fort, Hillsborough, Co. Down, on Friday,
26th September 2008. The judge will be Mr Dennis Gallant from New York State, USA.
Warning - Dangerous Toys
This is a warning of the dangers of giving Pet Rag Ropes to your Irish Wolfhound. They are not safe as playthings, whatever is claimed by the manufacturers. Recently, a Club member had the dreadful experience of losing two young Wolfhounds of 5 ½ months. They had managed to unravel a Rag Rope, and had ingested long lengths of the fibres, which became lodged in the gut and caused perforation. The symptoms were not immediately obvious, but by the time the vet had operated it was too late and the poor young hounds were lost. Our sympathies to their breeder/owner.
